Weekend Escape to Catania

The persistent grey over Vienna finally pushed me to a point where I needed sun. The decision came quickly: Catania. It had been far too long since I last set foot in Italy, and Sicily had remained a blind spot on my map.

Photography wasn’t the main purpose of this trip, yet my camera never left my side. Whenever a moment unfolded, I tried to catch it, especially through the lens of street photography. I found myself drawn to the everyday rhythms of southern Italian life, to the characters that make a city pulse. Nowhere was this more present than at the fish market, where chaos, voices, textures, and light create a world of their own.

Despite its raw edges, Catania is a place with a strong sense of authenticity, a city that doesn’t pretend. And as a destination, it’s absolutely worth visiting. Two or three days are plenty to explore the core of the city, get lost in its streets, and soak up that unapologetic Sicilian atmosphere.

I can easily imagine returning to see more of Sicily someday. But for now, something entirely different is coming up soon.

Stay tuned.
